Apple wants to turn your iPhone into a car key
The car connectivity consortium, one of whose members is Apple, announced the release of the new standard “digital key” that will open the locks and start the engine with NFC chips.
With the help of new technology, a consortium of automotive connections hopes to bring together the manufacturers of automobiles and mobile devices and create a unified standard for digital keys.
The system works just like the remote keys already present in some companies. Users authenticated with smart devices can lock, unlock, start the engine and to provide access to a specific car. The difference between the new standard from conventional solutions is that it will be based on the technology NFC chips and not Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
Due to the existing TMS infrastructure can safely pass the information of the digital key to your smartphone, compatible with modern cars.
As noted by the manufacturers, special attention is paid to the development of solutions for connecting phones to cars. Many manufacturers have already started obtaining patents. In the opinion of the consortium, a single standard will improve the quality of customer service and provide the corporations access to the latest technological developments and security protocols.
Support for the initiatives announced Audi and Volkswagen, Apple, BMW, General Motors, Hyundai, LG Electronics, Panasonic, Samsung, ALPS, Continental Automotive, DENSO, Gemalto, NXP and Qualcomm.
The first version of the digital key of the new standard is already being tested. The second should be released by the first quarter of 2019.
