Can the Mac become your gaming computer?
It is considered that Mac computers are not good for games. But is it really? Founder of Snazzy Labs, Quinn, Nelson conducted an experiment by running on iMac play GTA 5 on max settings with resolution of 2560 x 1440, to prove that Apple PC can be a gaming computer.
Recently become popular external graphics card like the Razer Core for Windows-based laptops. In theory Razer Core supports Mac, but most models are not equipped with Thunderbolt 3, with the exception of the new MacBook Pro 2016. Is Razer can be purchased BizonBox working on Thunderbolt 2. BizonBox, in fact is a modified version of the AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Box. Thunder 2 converts a standard PCIe accessories such as SSD, Thunderbolt for use with a Mac. But it is worth noting that the official support for the graphics cards there. A few minutes with a soldering iron and ATX, and you can easily turn the AKiTiO Thunder2 in Razer Core. The cost of the AKiTiO Thunder2 is $350, which is quite a lot.
Suppose that $350 is the right price for most people. Technically external video card can affect game performance Mac? Many PC games come out for Windows only because of DirectX, so the first thing you need to install Microsoft operating systems through Boot Camp. If you just connect an external graphics card, nothing happens, the computer will continue to use the built-in.
Bizon on the website you can find a large list of models that are incompatible with BizonBox. Some Macs with BizonBox on macOS, but on Windows everything is fine, the other does not support Windows, but on macOS there is no problem. There are even some devices that don’t work with Bizon on any OS. In the case of Mac, all the models have at least one compatibility constraint. The only iMac, which will be the least of the problems – iMac 5K 2014. On this computer Windows detects a dedicated graphics card, but it still does not work directly. Since the iMac uses discrete graphics card, will have anyway to connect another monitor to the external graphics card. So is it possible to play on Mac?
Nelson tested GTA 5 1016 GTX and GTX 980 Ti in 1080p. GTX 1016 gives 96 fps on a PC and 82 fps on Mac. The result on the Mac, of course, lower, but not as bad as 22 fps with the standard AMD 295x. With the GTC 980 Ti story is somewhat different – 147 fps on PC and 88 frames per second on a Mac that is only 60% of the performance of the PC. And this applies to all the tested games.
So technically you can play comfortably on the Mac. Although this is not recommended due to issues with compatibility and drivers necessary to connect an external display and too high prices. Much easier to buy a powerful PC or PlayStation.
