How to configure the spam filter in Mail app on macOS

Junk mail constantly comes to our email boxes. It can be mailing a Bank, forum, site, or notification services. In this tutorial we will explain how to filter unwanted emails in the Mail app on macOS.

All settings are hidden under “Spam”. To get into it need to open the application “Mail” → click “Mail” in the menu bar → select “Settings” → in the pop-up window go to “Spam”.

In this window there are a few basic options for handling spam. First you need to enable the “spam Filter”.

Then will have to decide what to do email client after receiving unsolicited letters. You can leave it in your Inbox labeled “Spam” or move it to a separate “Spam”folder.

The third option is customization. To go to him, you have to select “Run custom actions” and then click “Advanced” button at the bottom of the screen.

Advanced settings spam

In the drop-down list of “If” you can choose how many conditions must be fulfilled to assume the email is spam. You can choose from two options:

  • All of the following conditions are met.
  • One of the following conditions are met.

After selecting one of these options you need to set “Conditions” that determine the spam. Here everyone decides for himself which emails are considered spam.

Assume that unsolicited letters should include messages that contain the word “Closeout”. To do this, do the following:

  • Click on the “+”icon.
  • In the first drop-down list select “message Content”.
  • The average list leave the option “Contains”.
  • In the text box write “Sale”.
  • This condition will apply to all messages that come via e-mail. If the filter sees the word “Sale”, it will automatically transfer email to the folder “Spam”.

Option “Execute next action” defines what to do with junk e-mail. You can redirect them to any folder, mark with color or remove. The options are many, and they are configured on the same principle as the “Terms”.

After all actions are configured, click the OK button to save and return to the main settings screen spam.

In the settings you can choose which messages should be excluded from the rules. After removing the tick, the filters in them will not be applied.

If you want to restore default settings, click the “Reset”button.
